Can a Woman Make the Big Piece?
2012, Soft sculpture 25m x 2,5m
Participatory art project carried out by art group Rouge | Jelena Fuzinato and Bojana Stamenkovic
This work takes place in several stages. The first refers to the social activity where we gather material for the work- clothing items, donated by women from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Sweden and Austria. In the second phase of the work collected clothes are being organized and stitched together in order to create one piece. Slow process of sewing a one piece to another, assembling small parts we managed to create a huge soft sculpture, 25 m long and 2,5 wide. The project was conducted in collaboration with 40 women. In order to continue communication with participants of the project series of exhibitions, lectures, panel discussions, informal meeting were organised. The intention was to set a platform which is active and open to unexpected encounters, events, subjects and activities.
ROUGE Group is an artist collective that (used to be) based in Bosnia and Serbia.
Their work is based on short performative and visual acts that happen when they meet together in different geographical places (so far in Europe) and their practice is collaborative and multimedial.
The group uses visual two dimensional art practices, as well as video and installations, discussions and workshops in order to show, talk about or further develop specific questions.
ROUGE Group work investigates the inherent power structures within the gender relations and they explore its implementations in professional art field. Their subjects are based on socio political, art context and feminist studies, but the practice is very often relocated from official art premises and put into everyday situations.
