Part Of Something Bigger And Better Than You
„Part Of Something Bigger And Better Than You“, 2018
by Jelena Fuzinato
Duration: March 29 – April 30, 2018
curated by Bojana Stamenković
The video scene shows two women, in an open landscape, producing an object of unknown origin. The visual image is followed by the female voice reading the parts of The United Nations Economic Commission For Europe, Second Synopsis of Environmental Performance review – The document which intends to measure and review past progress and recommends future steps in managing environmental challenges. The original text has been altered so that the names of the countries are left out. In this way the audible and visual parts of the work are perceived together in similar way—the object whose shape does not inform about function or origin of it, and the voice which changed and deprived of crucial information about geographical and political context makes invisible local images and their meaning. The work puts our focus on the intersection where real and fictional come together in a cryptic narrative so that we are not able to distinguish one from another. The audio video installation tells the story of power and knowledge. The power relations between geographical territories are thematized here through the visual language and the language used in policy-making documents. The first one is used as the language of invented reality, and the latter as the language of the law that tailors and influences everyday lives in a direct way. Both languages collide in an abstract conglomerate projecting an idea from an object produced by the artist to a political speech and vice versa making us question how we perceive what is plausible and what is uncertain.
